storage tips from unboxy
TIP #1
Store items in order of access needs: items you need most should be at the front of the unit.
TIP #2
Forming a center aisle between your items will help create access to the entire unit.
TIP #3
To avoid creating an environment prone to moisture and mold growth, leave a few inches of space between your items and the wall.
TIP #4
Palettes, which can often be found for free, are great for keeping items and boxes off of the storage unit floor.
TIP #5
You can create more space when storing furniture by removing table legs and storing sofas on end, for example.
TIP #6
Documents, photographs and other paper storage tend to curl with age. Using cardboard to sandwich your paper items in between is a great way to keep them flat and safe. Tape the cardboard together to ensure the paper contents won’t slide out. (NOTE: we do not recommend long-term storage of sensitive or valuable paper documents in non-climate controlled storage units.)
TIP #7
If you need to store small machines or equipment with engines, drain all gasoline and oil to avoid wear on the machine parts and potential hazards from leaking fluids.
TIP #8
If you have lawn tools such as shovels, hoes and rakes, these can be conveniently stored upright in an empty trash can or large bin.
TIP #9
To avoid slumping, consider covering and storing mattresses flat on level surfaces, but not directly on the floor of the storage unit.
TIP #10
Wood needs to be treated to avoid drying and cracking. Consider using covers to protect wood items.
TIP #11
To delay the development of rust on metal items, be sure to wip all surfaces with a rag that has a few drops of machine oil. This will create a moisture barrier.
TIP #12
We make sure to provide a safe and secure place to store your property. To help us help you, we always recommend the use of high quality locks which are tamper proof on your unit.
TIP #13
You should always use common sense and follow state laws when considering what to store in your unit. You have the sole access to your unit during your valid lease terms. Please respect our property so that we can continue to provide a safe and secure place for you and others to store your property.
